In February 2020, HBO announced they had struck a deal with the cast of Friends to reunite for a one-off reunion special on their HBO Max streaming platform.
Needless to say, the news stunned fans, who had practically given up on hopes they’d ever see the sitcom’s stars all together again since it had been already been 16 years when the show ended with its 10th season in 2005.
Well, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, and Matthew Perry agreed to the reunion special — which shouldn’t be confused with the idea that they’re getting back together for a reboot.
This will literally be a one-time gathering of all cast members to relive some of the show’s best moments. Certain members of the star-studded group have often stressed how much they would hate the idea of working on another series — care to know who it is? Here’s the lowdown…
HBO’s announcement that the network had signed a deal for all of the Friends cast members to reunite in a one-off special was quite a shock.
HBO Max had already acquired rights to the show’s back catalog for a whopping $425 million at the time.
"Guess you could call this the one where they all got back together - we are reuniting with David, Jennifer, Courteney, Matt, Lisa and Matthew for an HBO Max special that will be programmed alongside the entire Friends Library,” Kevin Reilly, chief content officer for the company gushed.
In addition to the wonderful news, sources claimed each member of the cast was expected to receive an impressive $2.5 million for their partake in the special, which is more than double the amount they made per episode in Season 10 of the sitcom ($1 million).
Many fans were stunned by HBO’s announcement since Matthew had always been very vocal in not wanting to reunite with the cast for another series.
The actor had previously stressed that while he’s often asked about a Friends reboot, it’s not even something he would consider.
“I have this recurring nightmare, I'm not kidding about this. When I'm asleep, I have this nightmare that we do Friends again and nobody cares.
“We do a whole series, we come back, and nobody cares about it. So if anybody asks me, I'm gonna say no. The thing is: We ended on such a high. We can't beat it. Why would we go and do it again?”
That’s a fair point, but considering how popular Friends has been on streaming platforms such as Netflix, it’s pretty evident that people still love to watch the show — so the idea of a reboot wouldn’t be all that bad.
While Matthew isn’t on board to star in an entirely new series, it seems reuniting with his former cast for a one-off special is about as much as he is willing to do.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, HBO confirmed in May 2020 that the reunion will remain on hold indefinitely.
